Where everything you read here comes from, what this site works out for itself rather than taking from anyone else, and what you should know before you rely on it. The numbers on this page are read from the data itself the moment you open it, so no figure here goes stale.
Before you rely on anything here
Prayer times: calculated, not a fatwa
Astronomical calculation gives an approximation, not a certainty, and the precautionary minutes differ from one country to the next. We compared ours against an independent reference: it matched within a minute in 237 of 240 comparisons, the three exceptions all being London in summer, where twilight never fades. Where they differ, follow your mosque's adhan.
Hadith gradings: quoted, not ours
The hadith scholar's summary verdict is shown exactly as he worded it; sorting it into “sahih”, “hasan”, “weak” and “fabricated” is a reading aid, not a ruling from us. Anything whose grade is not clear is shown in full, with no tag.
An occurrence is not always the Name
On the Beautiful Names page we count each Name by its written form. Not every place the word appears is the Name itself — «ٱلْوَارِث» occurs in the verse ﴿وَعَلَى ٱلْوَارِثِ مِثْلُ ذَٰلِكَ﴾ where it means the heir of a person. So read each verse in its context.
Tafsir is an aid, not an authority
The two tafsirs shown here are abridged, and a translation of the meanings renders a meaning as it was understood, not the Quran itself — the Quran is not translated. Whatever remains unclear to you, refer it to the people of knowledge.
The word count is ours
We count 77,433 words by our own segmentation of the Uthmani text. We do not attribute that figure to the classical counting works: their numbers differ from ours and from one another, because where a word begins and ends is itself disputed.
What comes from outside
When you play a recitation or a dhikr, your browser connects to the server that hosts the file, and when fonts load it connects to Google. Those parties see your IP address, just as any site you visit does. There are no ads and no tracking code on this site, from anyone.

All downloaded once and kept on our server — your browser contacts no one to read them.

The API we downloaded the text, the two tafsirs and the eleven translations from. For the mushaf text it is a relay, not the origin — that is the Tanzil Project, named below.

The origin of the mushaf text we display and index. We compared ours against Tanzil letter by letter; they differed in five places only, and in all five Tanzil and the King Fahd Complex agreed against us — so we corrected ours to theirs. Tanzil asks that the source be named and linked; this is that notice.

The rendering of the Qur'an shown beneath every verse on the English pages — 2,291 verses across nine pages — and used in the English edition of Between Two Halls. It was chosen because it is in the public domain: the translator died in 1936 and the work was published in 1930, so no permission stands in the way of showing it. It renders the meaning; it is not commentary.

The hadith text, its narrator, its source, and the hadith scholar's summary verdict on it. Requested through our server when you search, and held for a week so the same request is faster — never kept beyond that.

The Beautiful Names of Allah

The list of the ninety-nine Names with their numbering, transliteration and English meaning. The number of times each Name occurs in the mushaf, however, is computed here from our own index, not copied.

What the copy lacks, we say
The "gaps" column counts numbers absent from the source copy itself between one and its highest number. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah have none; Bukhari has the most. A number you cannot find is a gap in the copy, not a failure of your search — and we never write "the complete book".

Quran in the text: source orthography, not Uthmani
Compilers quote verses in their chapter headings, and the source writes them in modern orthography between { }. We colour them but never wrap them in ﴾ ﴿ — those brackets are reserved here for the Uthmani mushaf text alone. Bridging them to our own index resolved 62% and left some three thousand unresolved, and guessing at the place of a verse is not permitted.

And we pass no ruling
Browsing is transmission, not verification: we carry the text of the book and add no judgement. For a ruling attributed to a named scholar, the Hadith Encyclopedia section gives it with its source and page.

Editorial apparatus is removed
Page tags, milestones and editors’ notes are all stripped — including five places in Sunan Abu Dawud reading "al-Albani’s ruling: hasan". Removing them is not concealment: a grade shown on five out of 5,274 would suggest the rest are ungraded, which misleads more than silence.

Numbering restarts in two collections
Sahih Muslim and Malik's Muwatta number from one in every book, so a bare number identifies nothing without its book. For Muslim we show the continuous Abd al-Baqi numbering where present (5,610 entries); the 684 entries without it are marked as in-book counters — dimmer, with a text label — so they are not read as citable numbers. For the Muwatta the copy's own counter stays, with its book named alongside it.
Names that appear on the site but are not sources
On the prayer times page you pick a “calculation method” that carries the name of an institution: Umm al-Qura, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, the Muslim World League, Diyanet, and others. These are names of conventions, not data sources. Nothing is downloaded from those institutions. The twilight angles and precautionary minutes they are known for are written into this site's code, and the calculation runs in your browser. None of them has reviewed this site or endorsed it.
