Where everything you read here comes from, what this site works out for itself rather than taking from anyone else, and what you should know before you rely on it. The numbers on this page are read from the data itself the moment you open it, so no figure here goes stale.

Before you rely on anything here

Prayer times: calculated, not a fatwa

Astronomical calculation gives an approximation, not a certainty, and the precautionary minutes differ from one country to the next. We compared ours against an independent reference: it matched within a minute in 237 of 240 comparisons, the three exceptions all being London in summer, where twilight never fades. Where they differ, follow your mosque's adhan.

Hadith gradings: quoted, not ours

The hadith scholar's summary verdict is shown exactly as he worded it; sorting it into “sahih”, “hasan”, “weak” and “fabricated” is a reading aid, not a ruling from us. Anything whose grade is not clear is shown in full, with no tag.

An occurrence is not always the Name

On the Beautiful Names page we count each Name by its written form. Not every place the word appears is the Name itself — «⁧ٱلْوَارِث⁩» occurs in the verse ⁧﴿وَعَلَى ٱلْوَارِثِ مِثْلُ ذَٰلِكَ﴾⁩ where it means the heir of a person. So read each verse in its context.

Tafsir is an aid, not an authority

The two tafsirs shown here are abridged, and a translation of the meanings renders a meaning as it was understood, not the Quran itself — the Quran is not translated. Whatever remains unclear to you, refer it to the people of knowledge.

The word count is ours

We count 0 words by our own segmentation of the Uthmani text. We do not attribute that figure to the classical counting works: their numbers differ from ours and from one another, because where a word begins and ends is itself disputed.

What comes from outside

When you play a recitation or a dhikr, your browser connects to the server that hosts the file, and when fonts load it connects to Google. Those parties see your IP address, just as any site you visit does. There are no ads and no tracking code on this site, from anyone.

    The mushaf text in the Uthmani script (the quran-uthmani edition) — both the display text and the basis of the search index — together with the two tafsirs and the eleven translations.

    The ar.muyassar edition. Its name in the file's metadata is spelled with a Persian yeh: «⁧تفسير المیسر⁩».

  • Tafsir al-Jalalayn

    The ar.jalalayn edition, by al-Mahalli and al-Suyuti.

Their names as they appear in each file's metadata, not as we would write them.

    The hadith text, its narrator, its source, and the hadith scholar's summary verdict on it. Requested through our server when you search, and held for a week so the same request is faster — never kept beyond that.

The Beautiful Names of Allah

    The list of the ninety-nine Names with their numbering, transliteration and English meaning. The number of times each Name occurs in the mushaf, however, is computed here from our own index, not copied.

Names that appear on the site but are not sources

On the prayer times page you pick a “calculation method” that carries the name of an institution: Umm al-Qura, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, the Muslim World League, Diyanet, and others. These are names of conventions, not data sources. Nothing is downloaded from those institutions. The twilight angles and precautionary minutes they are known for are written into this site's code, and the calculation runs in your browser. None of them has reviewed this site or endorsed it.

    An inverted index linking every word form to the verses it occurs in, built from the Uthmani script text itself. Alongside it, a table of spelling variants, so that someone typing «⁧السماوات⁩» finds «⁧ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ⁩».

    Eleven rules derived from the letters and script marks in the text itself, not from a ready-made colored file. We compared the results against an independent analysis; the counts matched on six of the rules.
